Public Seasonal Tourist Crime Prevention Programme

The southern shores of Lake Balaton, with summer holiday resorts, is situated on the north part of Somogy County. The area attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. Criminal acts against tourists have been increasing to the extent that a high proportion of all crime committed in the County occurs in this particular area. The issue had been made more difficult with policing problems following the change of the political system in 1990.

The sort of criminality taking place involved the theft of tourists' property and theft from vehicles. The solution involved a partnership between the police and local authorities working with local civil organisations and citizens, students and other volunteers to improve awareness of visitors to the problem. This was supported by increased levels of policing.

‘The operation of the crime prevention centres has been expanded: the students of 3 secondary schools take part in it and there are 4 offices by Lake Balaton (in the following settlements: Siófok, Balatonföldvár, Balatonszárszó, Balatonlelle).’
