Social mediation in schools - school mediator

France Médiation is piloting an innovative social mediation project in schools that has three major objectives:

  • To prevent and manage violence, conflicts, incivilities and harassment.
  • To prevent and fight against absenteeism and school dropout.
  • To develop civic behaviour and a culture of dialogue and tolerance.

The project is based on the creation of social mediator positions assigned to sites consisting of high schools and elementary schools. Through their presence in and around schools, they will prevent conflict situations, harassment, dropping out of school and even social exclusion, and through these actions, they will prevent delinquency and improve the school climate.

The project has been evaluated by an independent research laboratory. It has shown a massive impact on the reduction of harassment and violence, but also on the improvement of the well-being of pupils and the culture of dialogue and
appeasement.

The project started in September 2012 and is still running.
