It’s a matter of wildlife or death

Campaign on environmental crime

In the context of EMPACT, the EUCPN has developed an awareness raising campaign ‘it’s a matter of wildlife or death’ for the wider Law Enforcement officers (frontline officers, customs, …) network to increase their knowledge on wildlife trafficking. The campaign took place from the 15th of February until the end of March 2022.

The campaign had three objectives:

Objective 1 Increased awareness of the wider enforcement network on:

What is wildlife crime?
The possible risks and impact of wildlife crime including links to other crimes
The necessity of ensuring a more effective fight against wildlife crime
The role of the EU as transit, origin and destination region
The global, European and national legislation

Objective 2 Law Enforcement officers know their national contact point

Objective 3 Law Enforcement officers are encouraged to learn more through training

In order to achieve this we have developed a dedicated website containing a quiz. On the website Law Enforcement officers could one the one hand participate in the quiz (20 questions), and on the other hand find all the necessary information they needed to succeed in the quiz on the website. By succeeding in the quiz the participant could unbox an animal. A crucial element in this campaign was the fact that it was a joint effort on several levels: at the individual, national and the European level. Besides the website, newsletters, posters and three videos were developed.

The following countries and organisations have participated (19):
