Icehearts is not considered as a diversion from or alternative to time spend in criminal activity. Rather, sport is used as a means of establishing relationships with at-risk children and their families. The programme also aims at preventing circumstances that would lead to the taking of the child into custody by the child welfare authorities. Other objectives are to decrease inequality, prevent truancy and drop-outs, help ensure a peaceful and orderly school environment.
