The main goal of the Project is the creation of a robust legal framework that will ensure the protection of the rights of victims of GBV and domestic violence. The Project also envisage supporting the institutions providing social help and police protection in strengthening their administrative capacity and tools in handling cases of GBV and DV.

The personnel of these units receive specialised training in gender-based violence (aspects of police operations and psychosocial characteristics). Police protection for victims of gender-based violence is carried out in a comprehensive and personalised way (each victim is assigned a protective police officer from their first contact with the national police).

On the basis of the introduced provisions, the Police received a new right in the form of the possibility of issuing an order to immediately leave the jointly occupied apartment and its immediate surroundings against a person using domestic violence, or a ban on approaching the apartment and its immediate surroundings. The order or the ban is valid for a period of 14 days, with the possibility of extending its duration by the court.

The aim of the project was to change the state policy on the domestic violence in order to ensure timely and effective protection of potential victims. BKB was determined to prefer prevention to prosecution through the implementation of social legislative measures.

On 22 September 2016 the Irish Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald T.D., officially launched the Joint Strategy on the Management of Offenders (2016-18). This Strategy has been agreed between the Department, the Probation Service, the Irish Prison Service and the Irish Police Service and contains a range of objectives and actions for more intensive management of certain key offender types.
